Garden Pond Safety

Water Safety Scotland supports organisations which seek to raise awareness for parents through drowning prevention campaigns such as RoSPA's Garden Pond Safety Campaign.

According to RoSPA, on average, 5 under-6s drown every year in garden ponds in the UK. Drowning often occurs when the child is assumed to be safe in the garden. In order to prevent a garden pond drowning, RoSPA recommends three options:

  1. Cover it – covering the pond with a rigid metal grill
  2. Fence it – this can give a false sense of security as many children can climb
  3. Fill it – filling the pond is the best option to keep children safe.
